Wie zijn wij - Bridgerton version
Dearest gentle readers,
It is with the utmost delight that I regale you with the tale of a most extraordinary gathering, one that has, over the years, blossomed into a society of unparalleled charm and camaraderie.
Once upon a time—ah, for what grand story does not begin so?—in the year 2012, a simple inquiry graced the pages of a modest equestrian forum. A call, if you will, for those who might share a fondness for venturing out with their Shetland ponies. And so it was that, on the 13th of January in the year 2013, four eager carriages set forth upon the Ginkelse Heide, beneath a crisp winter sun and a sky so blue it seemed painted by the hand of an artist. That first ride, dear readers, was nothing short of magnificent, a day that left its participants not only with frost-kissed cheeks but with hearts alight with joyous memory.
So splendid was the affair that another outing was soon planned, and then another, and before long, a most delightful inevitability took place—Shetlander Menritten was born. What once was a gathering of kindred spirits soon found itself taking more official shape, and by 2017, such was the fervor of its members that a formal foundation was established. In the years since, word has spread far and wide, and today, any who find themselves in possession of a small, spirited pony—be it Shetland or otherwise—know that the SMR is the place to be for merriment, adventure, and the most delightful of equestrian pursuits.
In those early days, between 2013 and 2015, our excursions spanned a modest 7 to 8 kilometers, with the occasional sporting endeavor of 10 kilometers or more. But, dear readers, as with all grand things, ambition knew no bounds. Distances increased, and today, rides of 15 to 20 kilometers are quite the norm, though shorter journeys remain for those who prefer a more leisurely pace. And lo, as the enthusiasm of our members grew, so too did our ambitions, leading us beyond mere pleasure rides and into the realm of grand events.
Ah, who among our most faithful does not recall the Indoor Clinic Day? A marvel of an occasion held in the grand halls of Arnhem, where drivers and ponies alike tested their mettle in clinics of all sorts—be it driving, groundwork, or even such spectacles as the National Championship of Pony Football and a thrilling blindfolded obstacle course. Though the grand event has since transformed into more bespoke clinics, held as opportunity and demand allow, it is remembered with great fondness.
Then, of course, came the Competition Day, an event most ingeniously designed to suit the swift but sturdy legs of our small equine companions. Five splendid editions were held before the arrival of a most unwelcome guest—the great disruption of 2020. Though preparations for a sixth were well underway, fate intervened, and alas, it was not to be. With changes among our esteemed leadership and the growing burden of responsibilities, the time had come to look towards new ventures.
But do not think, dear readers, that idleness took hold of our ranks! Nay, from the ashes of one tradition rose another—Shetdurance, a competition of endurance, elegance, and spirit. Established in 2020, this most thrilling of contests calls upon ponies and their drivers to embark upon grand distances, ensuring both fitness and enjoyment of the splendid scenery. A test not merely of speed, but of stamina and skill, it is an annual affair that has swiftly earned its place as a jewel in our crown.
In our earliest days, our noble society adhered to the traditional height limit of 1.10 meters, in accordance with the studbook. But, as time marched forward and demand grew, a most splendid innovation took place. A "Giants' Class" was introduced for those ponies who, though slightly taller, were no less eager to partake in our merriment. And now, in 2024, another milestone has been reached—the official height limit has been raised to 1.15 meters, allowing even more fine equines to join our ranks.
And so, dear readers, here we stand—years after that fateful first ride, a society not only thriving but flourishing! With each passing season, we welcome new faces, each drawn by a shared love of the small but mighty driving pony. Our events, our adventures, our very spirit—it is all made possible by our dedicated board members, tireless volunteers, and the most wonderful participants one could hope to meet.
Welcome, one and all, to the SMR.
Yours most devotedly,
The SMR Reighn
